If you have ever done a vision board, then you know what it’s like to focus on the things that you want. But what about the vision for how you want to feel and be? Most of us would rather feel happy or be satisfied than simply have a red car. Because how often have you gotten the thing that you desire, only to be disappointed or for it to be anticlimactic?
And what about when you do everything right, but everyone and everything around you is falling apart?
In today’s show you will learn the three steps to creating your authentic vision:
-
How to accurately assess where you are right now (your current location) and where you want to go, (your desired destination) so the universe can light up your path and tell you where to go.
-
The importance of tuning into the why behind your vision, and
-
Why integrating your past and your present with what you want for your future is essential.
Why Vision Boards Work
Vision boards work because they help you focus. When you focus your attention on anything, you tend to see more of that thing. It doesn’t matter if it’s positive or negative – if you are looking for something, you will tend to notice that thing.
Try it out by selecting something to think about this week. A certain number, a song, or a certain behavior. Suddenly “your” number will appear on license plates, clocks, and in messages everywhere! No, it’s not magic, it’s the power of focus and the strength of our attention! If we focus on bills, we will get more bills, and if we focus on abundance, we’ll get more of that too.
Why Vision Boards Don’t Work
Vision boards don’t work when the thing that you want is subtle, elusive, or cannot easily be seen. Additionally, most people don’t really want things as much as they want to feel a certain way or to experience life being different than they are.
Focusing on a red car might indeed bring you a new red car, but are you going to feel hollow or disappointed by that car? What happens when it gets scratched in the Target parking lot? Dented by hail? And how long is your red-car-joy actually going to last, especially when you learn that a loved one is sick or that that the promotion you were counting on isn’t going to happen?
How to Make a Vision Board That Works
Making a vision board that work requires you to do three things:
1. Accurately assess where you are right now(your current location) and where you want to go, (your desired destination) so the universe can light up your path and tell you where to go.
Unless you know both where you are and where you want to be, the path will never become clear. Just like with any GPS system, you will never get to your desired destination unless you also know where are starting from.
It doesn’t matter the skill, problem, or destination, accurately assessing where you are at is the key in getting the help, directions, and support you require.
If you want to learn a musical instrument and tell me that you already know how to read music (when you really can’t) my teaching will be meaningless to you. As a yoga teacher, I can teach you how to do flying crow (an advanced, arm balancing move that requires both strength and flexibility). But my breakdown and instruction to you will be vastly different if you tell me that you are a beginner or a seasoned yogi.
The first step in creating a vision board that works, is being honest about where you are at right now.
2. Tune into the why behind your vision.
Goals and dreams are great, but if they aren’t your goals and dreams, your inspiration and motivation will be short lived.
I can’t tell you how many times, as a hypnotherapist, a client would tell me that they wanted to quit smoking for their kids or lose weight for their partner. While having other people supporting you is great, and can be helpful, your vision is for you!
Yes, your kids or your partner can be a part of your why, but let’s face it – we do what we want to do, and unless you really want something, it’s not going to just happen.
3. Integrate your past and your present with what you want for your future.
This might seem confusing, but really, it’s not! As Socrates said, Know Thyself. Know who you are, what you are capable of, what you have been through, what’s on your plate right now, and where you want to be, and when.
Basically, don’t let yourself off the hook, but also be very realistic!
- When I l want to lose weight, I know that I need to do it quickly or I’ll burn out and quit, so I hit it hard!
- I don’t think as creatively in the mornings as I do late at night, so when I need to create, I stay up late.
- I’m a terrible finisher! (Next week’s show is all about finishing what we start, so if you are like me and struggle with finishing things that you’ve started, then tune in next week!) I need to “trick” myself into finishing or I’ll drag things out ad nauseam!
What about you? What is the vision you are holding for 2021 and beyond?
Keep the inspiration going strong all year long! Join in the conversation every Monday in the Flaunt Flock Facebook group at 10:30 AM MST. Meet other women who have lost touch with themselves, are experiencing some sort of life transition, and who just want to be happy again. Together you can get clear on who you are exclusive of your labels, roles, and scripts; what you want; and show up authentically as you are, not as you think you should be; so you can re-choreograph the next half of life on your own terms, and finally feel the joy, enthusiasm, and satisfaction you are looking for.
