Why don’t I finish what I start?

It doesn’t matter if fear of success or fear of failure, not finishing what you’ve started is the result of some sort of fear of judgment. Judgment is crippling in any form, whether it’s judgment from others or judgment from self, and because it stops even the most competent and capable person in their tracks, rest assured that you are not alone!

Finishing anything means that you are opening yourself up for what’s next too. Sometimes we don’t finish something because we are in need of a break, a reset, or time to shift gears. Ask yourself, if I knew that there was a reprieve after completing this project, would I be more or less likely to complete it? If the answer is yes, then schedule in a break or a treat for yourself, and allow yourself to savor the joy of completing your project without rushing ahead to the next one.

How do you push yourself to finish what you have started?

The best way to finish what you start is to understand why you are having a hard time finishing your work. As is explored in great detail in the accompanying podcast, sometimes we are keeping ourselves safe by not completing our work. Sometimes we know that taking the last step in a situation will irreparably harm us or those we love.

When you recognize what is really going on – fear of judgment, fear of having to launch into the next project, or something deeper such as fear of losing connection with those that we love, fear of being pushed into an unhealthy situation, or fear of not being able to manage your own emotions – you will be much more likely to get the real help that you need.

Humans are self-sustaining organisms and our minds are designed to keep us safe. Before pushing yourself too aggressively, step back and see if you can pinpoint what’s really going on. You might be surprised at how your perceived procrastination was really an ingenious method of keeping you safe!

Why is it important to finish what you start?

Having pride and trust in yourself is important for healthy self-concept. It is also important in establishing trusting relationships with others. We all want to be men and women of our word, and we all want to enjoy a certain measure of success. Finishing what you starts builds healthy self-concept and it improves our relationships with others. Plus, it feels good and makes us happy!

In today’s show you will:
